The year is 972 A.D. in Kyoto, the capital of ancient Japan. Kyoto is becoming a corrupt and run-down city; selfish samurai and onmyoji, who care only about gaining political power are everywhere. To make matters worse the city is suffering from famine and widespread disease. Unable to ignore the condition of the city any longer, the Imperial Court decides to send Minamoto no Raiko, a famous samurai well-known for his archery skills, to recover a legendary gem said to hold mysterious power to save the world. However Raiko also falls ill to disease. Instead his youngest sister, Hikaru, decides secretely to make the journey in his place. Hikaru meets many people, and has many adventures while on her trip for the legendary gem. (Source: ANN)
This anime was divided into two arcs, Heian arc and Tokyo arc, consist of 13 episodes each. Like others, many like the Heian arc better than the Tokyo, same goes with me. However, the Tokyo arc was actually not that bad, it's just that you watched the Heian arc first and it gives you a strong flow of story and the characters are richer in psychical and emotional level.
This anime has a fair blend of history, adventure, fantasy and romance. I know this anime was not associated with romance genre, but I like to put it alongside the first three genres. What I like about Hikaru and Mansairaku in the Heian arc is they didn't use mushy words to understand each other. They're probably among couple that use lesser romantic words but yet you can feel they're connected to a much higher level compare to those who use such words.

Their first direct encountered. I love this scene.
I like Hikaru better in the Heian arc. She is gentle but yet a strong girl unlike in the Tokyo arc, where she sometimes can be quite irritating girl especially when she's crying and repeatedly saying "nande? doshite?" over and over again.

Mansairaku (Heian arc)
Will update this with picture of Mansairaku in Tokyo arc.
